Going to Ecuador

Acabo de dejar vacía (literalmente) mi cuenta de ahorros. En un par de horas salgo para Ecuador, en donde pasaré un par de semanas recorriendo ciudades de la costa y andes del país. Entre las que más llaman mi atención están definitivamente Quito, Cuenca y Baños. Sin embargo, visitaré la playa y estaré un día en Guayaquil. También me encantaría subir al volcán Cotopaxi, aunque leí por ahí que es algo caro. Ya veremos. El itinerario no siempre resulta tal como lo planeaste y eso es parte de la aventura.

Las fotos son de navidad, estaba haciéndome un peinado y bueno, las caras son consecuencia del proceso (jalones de pelo involuntarios, auch).

I've just left my saving account empty (and I mean it). I'm leaving to Ecuador in a couple of hours, i will be travelling across the country for about a couple of weeks, I'm pretty excited. The pictures on the left were taken on christmas, I was trying to get a decent hair do myself and well, pain is a part of the process (therefore the funny-angry face).

Vi esta película el otro día. La trama no me impresionó mucho y como siempre que veo una película que "está buena, pero no tanto", mi mente se dispersó en los detalles de la dirección de arte (que sí me pareció buenísima). Es como si cada prenda y objeto elegido ayudara a recrear un ambiente lúgubre y gris como el cielo londinense. Todo encaja en una paleta de colores tierra, nada de rojos ni azules estridentes, no porque no sean colores agradables a la vista, sino porque no hubieran aportado a la atmósfera tétrica que el director (Mark Romanek) necesitaba para contar su historia. Bien pensado.

Saw this movie the other day. I wasn't too impressed with the whole storytelling and whenever I see an "all right but not too good" movie, my mind scatters itself among the art direction details that however i did find amazing. It was like if every garmet was specially chosen to create a lugubrious atmosphere that matched London's grey sky. Colors like red and electric blue are pleasent to the eye, but they wouldn't help the director (Mark Romanek) to turn his ideas of what is gloomy into visuals.

My sister told me about Billboard's mashup mondays and showed me Sara Bareille's version of single ladies (in my opinion, way better than Beyonce's) and then Matisyahu singing use somebody. I just wanted to spread the goodies with you on a sunny sunday like today (well, sunny for us, peruvians).

Ahora sí me pasé de vueltas con el abandono de este espacio. He estado tan distraida como ocupada (cuestiones académicas, perdidas en la biblioteca y encuentros con personas que tenía un poquito desatendidas), tanto que hasta olvidé lo placentero que es redactar aquí para mí, como reflexión personal (pienso todo el tiempo, pero si no escribo lo que pienso todo equivaldría a un cúmulo difuso de ideas que no me llevarían a nada) y como compartir con ustedes y sus imaginarios. Tengo que volver a tomar control de esto, porque me hace bien. La estética a través de las fotos bonitas de ciudades, personas y vestidos es mi debilidad. Espérenme tantito, ¿si? Amor para todos.

When I read Chris Taylor (Grizzly bear's bassist) was the producer, I knew that giving it a try was must (now you know how my brain works on matter of "searching for new stuff to hear"). The guys from The morning benders are definitely my indie pop providers for this month.

Apenas leí que Chris Taylor (bajista de la banda Grizzly bear) fue el productor de esta joyita, supe que tenía que darle una oportunidad (ahora ya saben como funciona mi cerebro en materia de buscar nuevas bandas para escuchar). Los chicos de The morning Benders son is nuevos proveedores de indie-pop para este mes.

Everyone that knows me should know about my interest for this culture that goes from their lifestyle to their arquitecture and even clothing. From all of their wardrobe, there is one that I find truly amazing and versatile: The Sari. This piece is a 6 meter fabric that women wrap around their body (if you're curious about how to wear them, there are some tutorials on youtube). The Sari could give us a clue to some aspects of their life, such as religion, origin and occupation. And let's not forget the colorful bangles and henna tattoos. I'm amazed by how much this culture has to offer as inspiration to our daily dressing.

Seguro los que me conocen saben de mi afición por esta cultura. Por supuesto que va desde las costumbres, hasta la arquitectura y hasta la ropa. De todas las prendas, hay una que me llama mucho la atención: El Sari, probablemente una de las prendas más versátiles que conozco, consiste en una tela de casi 6 metros que se arma en el cuerpo (hay manuales en youtube si les da curiosidad). El Sari puede dar muestra de ciertas características (como religión, región, ocupación) de la mujer que lo lleva de acuerdo al cómo lo lleve (además del tipo de tela que use). Además, no olvidemos las joyas coloridas, llenas de diamantina y escarcha y los tatuajes de henna en formas tan maravillosas y creativas que hasta podría tildárseles de artísticas. Me fascina ver cuanto esta cultura ofrece de inspiración para el vestir diario.

Lima is as wonderful as big. Sometimes I think I'll never know every nook and cranny and I get scared. The last Friday I went for a walk downtown with my mom and uncle. The initial plan was visiting some second hand book stores and having lunch at a restaurant run by french nuns (going there is a great option if you want to try food with a french twist for a price that a student/part-time worker budget can afford). But, we went a little off course when we found ourselves in a contemporary peruvian visual art exhibit. Lucky for me, my companions were as excited as I with the whole art collection, so we spent long time there marveling ourselves with such pieces.

El viernes pasado me di una vuelta por el centro de la ciudad en la mañana. El plan era bastante claro. Había quedado con un tío y mi madre en ir por recorrido de puestos de libros en Jr. Quilca seguida de un almuerzo en L' Eau Vive, que es un restaurante en el cual francesas misioneras se encargan de la cocina (es una buena opción para probar comida con un toque francés a un precio no muy alto que un presupuesto de estudiante/trabajadora a medio tiempo como el mío puede cubrir). Sin embargo, cuando llegamos nos desviamos del plan inicial un poco porque se nos ocurrió entrar a la Casona de San Marcos (Av. Nicolás de Piérola, Parque Universitario).

Ya dentro, pregunté en voz alta ¿no hay alguna exposición de arte? Uno de los caballeros de seguridad escuchó y me indicó que en el 2do piso funcionaba el Museo de Arte del CCSM. Subimos y se trataba de una exposición de Arte contemporáneo que reunía el trabajo de artistas visuales peruanos. Las obras habían sido seleccionadas y acomodadas con cuidado. Algunas ya las había visto en muestras individuales o en clases de la universidad, pero muchas no y perdí la noción del tiempo recorriendo los distintos espacios. Por suerte, mi madre y mi tío disfrutan mucho este tipo de experiencias y no me hacían señas para irnos. Particularmente un proyecto llamó mi atención, "Muro" de Luz María Bedoya. Estaba constituido por fotos y una proyección de video. Básicamente se muestra a una persona arrugando un papel que contiene mensajes ininteligibles y luego insertándolo en grietas de muros de tres ciudadades distintas: Lima, Dublin, Porto Alegre y Venecia. Una vez colocado, la artista toma una foto del último plano mostrado en la video proyección. Vale la pena verlo si es que no han tenido una aproximación al trabajo de Bedoya aún. No faltaron tampoco los trabajos de Teresa Carvallo, Alberto Quintanilla, Roberto Huarcayo, Jesús Ruiz Durand... en fin.

El centro de Lima es tan grande como maravilloso. A veces pienso que nunca terminaré de conocer todos sus recovecos y me asusto. Ahora, cuéntenme ustedes, ¿conocen Lima?

Tried making scandinavian like food the other day (I tasted some once in Ikea). As I couldn't find lingonberry jam at any market here, I replaced it with elderberry jam. The meatballs looked more like meatsquares though.

Intenté hacer comida escandinava el otro día (una vez probé en Ikea y me pareció simple). Reemplacé la mermelada de arándanos por sauco porque aquí no la venden. Las bolas de carne (albóndigas) me salieron más parecidos a cuadrados de carne, pero en fin, mejoraré.

{ Today's the last day of august }

Es 6+1. El séptimo mes, mi mes favorito. Temperatura perfecta para disfrutar en estos 31 días que fueron, mitad vacaciones y trabajo, mitad estudios y trabajo. Los primeros 15 días transcurrieron con calma. No llegué a leer todos los libros que quise, ni a ver todas las películas que me hubiera gustado, ni a visitar todas las exposiciones que me interesaban, pero disfruté cuanto mi horario me permitió. Me hice dos promesas. No comprar más cajetillas de cigarros ni aceptar los que me inviten y dejar de tomar bebidas con gas. Adiós Coca Cola Zero (me haces daño). La segunda comenzó el día número dieciséis, un lunes muy temprano. Estaba resfriada y de mal humor, aunque lo disimulaba con habilidad. Comenzaron clases y armé grupos de trabajo para los cursos. Aprobé mi curso de alemán, decidí documentar mi vida más a menudo y no he roto mis promesas (conforme pasa el tiempo todo se vuelve más sencillo).

Today's 6+1. Mi favourite month. Perfect timing during these 31 days, which hapenned to be half work+vacations, half work+uni. The first fifteen days The first 15 days passed quietly. It's true I did not read all the books I wanted, neither saw all the movies that I would have liked or visited all the exhibits that interested me, but I enjoyed life as much as my schedules allowed me to. Made myself a couple of promises: Stop buying cigarrettes and regreting the ones my friends offer me. Stop drinking soda. Goodbye Coca Cola Zero (as delicious as harmful). The second half began on day 16th, a very early Monday. I had a flu and felt moody. I passed my german, I decided to document my life more often and haven't broke my promises (as time passes by it becomes easier to keep them).

{ Contradictions }

This 'fashion world' (blogosphere included) thing surprises me. In the last days I've been thinking about how ridiculous is when someone says that "Fashion/Mode=expression". Mode is an statistic term that refers to an item that appears very often. If we understand that (and sounds familiar to the way that this industry is currently working), then I've got some questions: How certain is that argument? Is there really an space for expression within the whole "I'm trying to be fashionable" attitude or do people only say that because they want to feel and sound interesting? aren't many of them just following what magazines/stylists/fashion bloggers say it's good for looking skinnier or "in style"?

I don't know about you guys, but the words "I express myself when getting dressed" when coming from a mannequin-like dressed person sound like total bullshit to me. Come on. If something they're expressing is just a distressing lack of creativity.

I'm afraid I'll never know enough or too much about a topic but if there's something I like to believe (and is useful as common thread on this blog) is that following fashion and its rules strictly is, besides being boring, like limiting ourserlves and our imagination, like taking away more freedom from the few we already have and I'm not sure we want that.

Probably some of you won't be happy with these sayings, maybe some of you won't come back, but I had to make these notes. It's a part of being here and not feeling exactly here until I take my dose of reality pills. Let me know what you think.

Este mundillo de trapos y (la blogósfera de moda no se salva) sorprende. Hace poco estuve pensando en lo absurdo que es cuando alguien dice "con la moda yo me expreso". Si, como sabemos, la moda es un término estadístico que indica aquello que más se repite, entonces, me pregunto: ¿cuanto de cierto hay en dicho argumento? ¿existe espacio para la expresión dentro de la 'moda' realmente? ¿la gente se expresa mediante sus prendas o simplemente dice que es así para sonar más interesante? ¿No se estará simplemente saciando la necesidad de comprar aquello que las tiendas y revistas señalan que está 'de moda'? ¿no se estará guiando de lo que las 'consejeras de moda'/'estilistas' señalan que las hace lucir más flacas o jóvenes?

No sé a ustedes, pero a mí esos comentarios de "me expreso con mis prendas" viniendo de personas que fácilmente podrían ser confundidas con algún maniquí de catálogo que lleva las '5 prendas de temporada' a la vez, me suenan a pura farsa. O, bueno, en último de los casos, tal vez sí expresen algo. Algo como "carencia de creatividad" quizá.

Nunca sabré demasiado ni suficiente de un tema, pero si hay algo que me gusta creer y que de paso me sirve de hilo conductor para esta bitácora es lo siguiente: Seguir la moda estrictamente, además de ser aburrido es ponerle un límite a nuestra imaginación. Es quitarnos más libertad de la poca que tenemos y no queremos eso... ¿o sí? Díganme.

Tal vez pierda uno que otro lector luego de esto, pero tengo que hacerlo, es parte de hacer este espacio más personal, es parte de intentar sentirme más a gusto aquí, es parte de estar aquí y sentir que solo estoy en tanto me sincero y concilio mis intereses.
